Traditional Karaoke

Karaoke is a form of music entertainment that started in Japan and has since become a popular form of entertainment, in bars and at parties, around the world. Karaoke allows amateur singers to display their talents and entertain the crowd by singing the lead lyrics over popular songs. The words to the song display on a small video screen to guide each singer. Traditional karaoke songs are popular because cultures around the globe know the words to the song.
  1. "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

    • This song was one of the disco era's biggest hits. Whether you are a male or female performer, the crowd will join in singing the chorus every time. The first stanza, "First I was afraid / I was petrified / Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side," really gets the performer pumped to sing this relatively long song.

    "Like a Virgin by Madonna

    • Madonna's 1980s hit is a smash with the crowd because people love to see the performer's erotic facial expressions and dramatic movements. This song is fun to watch when guys belt it out because they like to mimic Madonna's licentious video gestures.

    "YMCA" by The Village People

    • People love to act out this song. Performers usually stumble through the verses, but they always rebound once the chorus comes in. Someone in the crowd will usually encourage the performer by mimicking The Village People by forming the letters with the singer during the chorus.

    Michael Jackson

    • Two popular Michael Jackson karaoke songs are "Billie Jean" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Michael Jackson is one of the most popular music performers of all time. Men and women alike enjoy performing his music and his dance moves.

    1980s Rock Songs

    • Pat Benatar's song "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll" are favorites among female karaoke performers. Both songs are crowd favorites --- especially when it's girls' night out and a group of ladies hits the stage.

"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye

    • "Let's Get it On," a favorite among the older night crowd, is a good song to perform when it's time to slow the mood down. This song is not so long that it becomes slow and boring, and it has some good parts that allow the crowd to join in.
