Becoming a member of a rap group, or gaining representation as a rap artists can be an challenging pursuit. Generally speaking, rappers book shows by sending out their demo and by gaining management or representation by an agent. Personal connections are always the greatest way to break into any artistic industry, however, with the advent of the internet, many musicians are opting for a do-it-yourself approach to starting their careers. It is becoming expected to have an online presence, a tight and well-rehearsed live show, a following on social media platforms and a website.

      Record a demo of your music. It is simple to do this inexpensively using at-home equipment. Try and build relationships with producers in the area who might become fans of your music and help you out by attending shows and events.

      Perform at open mic performances, battles in your area, on the street with a buskin license or just about anywhere to try and build a following. Make sure to bring copies of your demo with all of your social media handles printed on them.

      Music bloggers have a lot of power. Send them a track or a copy of your demo for review.

      Go to clubs in your area and ask for the contact information for their booking agents. Try and meet them face to face, if you can, and always have a copy of your demo. As you build up reviews and press, create a press pack by printing off reviews of your shows and music and bring it with you.
