Executive Music Producer Duties

An executive music producer handles the business aspect of record-making but not the technical aspect. An executive music producer is integral to the music business, and makes the whole process of recording music possible.
  1. Finding Talent

    • Executive music producers may help find musicians to help write and perform a song, as well as the technical crew needed to record it.

    Financing

    • Executive music producers help secure financing for the production of the record. Recording a song is expensive and requires paying for the use of a studio, engineers and any necessary technical equipment.

    Production

    • While it is the music producer who primarily works with the artist on the technical construction of the record, the executive producer supervises the recording. This may include troubleshooting any problems that crop up and a variety of miscellaneous tasks, such selecting which tracks to include on the album or what cover art to use.

    Promotion

    • Once the record has been made, potential consumers must be made aware that the record exists. It falls to the executive music producer to promote the album to media such as magazines, radio and the Internet, and in advertising.

    Distribution

    • Once the record has been made, the executive music producer is responsible for ensuring that consumers are able to buy the record. This is done by making sure that distributors, such as stores or websites, are supplied with the record and are prepared to sell it.

    Representation

    • Executive music producers often represent artists or music labels in negotiations for ancillary rights related to a record, such as merchandising, publishing and licensing.
