Roles of a Music Producer

A music producer's job is to take a song or a song idea and create a professional music recording. The producer is basically responsible for getting the job done. If the project is a full album, he or she coordinates everything that needs to be done for the project. Below is a description of the many hats a producer may wear. A producer's job varies according to each specific project, so he or she may do some of what is below, all of what is below or manage those who perform the tasks below.
  1. Executive Producer

    • The Executive Producer is responsible for the financing of the project. He or she may also manage all the other producers on a project.

    Composer

    • Some producers also write the lyrics to the songs they are recording, and many producers take lyrics from another composer and create the musical backing for the song. A producer's primary job on a rap song might be to create the beat or backing track for a song.

    Arranger

    • One of a producer's main functions is to make sure a song sounds good. That means picking the appropriate style and arrangement of a song.

    Personnel

    • Another job a producer may have is picking the engineer, background singers and the instrumentalists who play on the song or album.

    Recording and Mixing

    • The producer will either mix the record or choose the engineers who will do so.

    Vocal Production

    • The producer will often coach the vocalists during the recording to make sure the best performance is given.
