How to Cite a CD Recording

Whether your CD will sell millions of copies or just ten, it is important to reference all of your CD’s recording details before it is published. This is done for advertising, meeting the legal obligation to cite the producer and studios and because you want professional and accurate CD packaging. Cite a CD recording by gathering all of the information and presenting it clearly and accurately.

Gather all of the recording information. Important details you will need to know include producer and technician names, studio addresses and any equipment used. If you used an external recording company, contact them and confirm any details: they will be more than happy to help.

    • 2

Decide how you are presenting your CD recording information. Most albums cite their CD recordings by listing the producer first. The producer is closely followed by (in order) the mixers, specific track producers, engineers, assistants and the studio address. However, there is no official way you must cite a CD recording: you can change the order or add additional parties to the project.

    • 3

Write your CD recording information in a word processing program. Begin a new line every time you mention a new group of people. For example, if your first line is “Produced by John Smith,” start a new line and write, “Mixed by Jane and Jack Doe." Finish your notes with the full address of the recording studio. If more than one studio was used, cite them.

    • 4

Insert a copyright notice into your CD packaging. You will be required to do this if your recording company is at least semi-professional. The copyright notice prevents the unauthorized copying and selling of any of the CD tracks. Even if the CD was recorded by yourself at home you should include a copyright notice and protect your hard work from being sold without your permission. All commercial CDs have their copyright notice on the rear of the CD cover, below the track listing. They also have the notice in the CD booklet.

Proofread your recording information before you print it. Check with the rest of the band that there is nobody you have left out and ensure that the names and addresses are spelled correctly. Once you are satisfied with the CD recording details, send it to your CD packaging printer. If you are citing the information for a personal CD, print the notes in your homemade CD booklet.
