Mic Pre-Amps Vs. Using a Mixer

With the rise of digital recording and home studios, there is a strong misconception about the type of equipment needed for a professional quality home studio. One of the most common misconceptions is the need for a microphone pre-amp and a mixer.
  1. Pre-Amps

    • Pre-amps are devices that supply power to microphones and boost the signal received from microphones.

    Pre-Amp Uses

    • A pre-amp can be used as a stand-alone power and output source for a microphone when little other equipment is available.

    Mixers

    • Mixers combine several audio signals into a single audio output.

    Mixer Uses

    • A mixer can be used as a pre-amp as well as a hub for multiple microphones.

    Pre-Amp vs Mixer

    • Both mixers and pre-amps can be used as stand-alone equipment, but using both can greatly increase the audio. A mixer should be used if multiple microphones are being utilized, however.
