Vinyl to MP3 Software

With digital music becoming the standard format in the recording industry, moving your vinyl collection to a personal computer is a practical--and potentially time consuming--idea. There are several software options available when converting records to digital files.
  1. All-in-One Software

    • There are several integrated packages on the market that include a record player, the required cables and software that simplify recording vinyl on to your computer. The high-end Pro-Ject Debut III is a good choice if you are willing to pay for extra quality. For smaller budgets, the Audio-Technica AT-LP2D has received positive remarks from computer expert Daniel Dern.

    Unbundled Software

    • If you already have a turntable, then buying another one is not necessary. If your PC's sound card has an audio-in jack, you can run your turntable directly into the computer using any of several digital recording programs. There is freeware including Audacity, shareware including Amadeus Pro and fully licensed software like Adobe Audition or Sound Forge to suit any budget.

    Other Considerations

    • Not all software programs offer the same benefits and features. Some offer only basic recording, while others have tools to help with gain leveling, creating ID3 tags and compatibility with your music library. Choose the program that best suits your needs.
