What Is the Swing on an MPC 1000?

The MPC 1000 is a music production sampler/mixer manufactured by Akai electronics. The MPC includes a built in sequencer, sampler and quantize function known as "swing". The swing function has different settings which can be used to determine the "feel" of the music.
  1. Function

    • The MPC 1000's swing function can be used to enhance the feel of a song and as a time correction device. In the industry, this feature is typically called "quantizing". On the MPC 1000, the swing feature can be left at a default state, increased or decreased or used with MIDI to synchronize beats.

    Features

    • The swing feature provides a human feel for sequencers and programmed songs. The swing feature is accessed through the menu feature on the MPC 1000 and can be adjusted between values of 50 percent to 75 percent.

    Expert Insight

    • For musicians using rhythm machines and live instrumentation to record on the MPC 1000, the swing feature reduces the mechanical sound and feel of the composition which is being recorded. When a natural musician plays an instrument, the travel of sound to a listener's ear is usually counted in milliseconds. The swing feature makes the music feel authentic.
