How to Use the Sampling Pads on the Yamaha AW4416

Integrated audio work stations such as the Yamaha AW4416 are capable of recording audio, which you then assign to a sample pad. You then treat the sample pad as a line-level instrument by pressing it to trigger the original audio recording. This makes integrating audio into your recordings easier and reduces the need for complex editing.

Instructions

    • 1

Power up your console. Wait for the LED screen to illuminate.

    • 2
Try to get as clean a sound as possible when recording samples.

Load your samples. There are two ways to access samples: The built-in sample library stored on the AW4416 contains a range of loaded samples. You can add your own by inserting a compact disc into the disc drive and selecting them from the screen menu when they are displayed. If you want to record an original sample, connect your microphone to the XLR input jack and hit "Record." The AW4416 can sample a sound or audio source for a maximum of 90 seconds. Once you've captured the sample, hit save. Then assign the sample to the patch library in the hard drive.

Assign samples to pads. Use the buttons directly under the LED display to scroll through the sample library. When you find a sample that you wish to assign to a pad, select "Assign." Then select a number for a vacant sample pad. There are 16 sample pads in total. In order to set the samples for playback, they must be assigned to a pad. If you want to play the samples back in stereo, assign the sample sound to an even numbered pad and the odd number directly after it. You might need to remove samples from the odd numbered pads to make room. Do this by selecting the sample and selecting "Save." The display promptsw you to select a new sample pad for that particular sample.

Trigger the samples. The sample pads are located directly below the LED display. To trigger them, push the sample pad and hold it in. The pads are not velocity sensitive so you can't increase the volume of the sample pad by hitting it harder. If you wish for certain samples to be louder than others, access the sample library, select the sample and select "Edit." Select "Gain" and increase the gain.

Release the samples. To release a sample, remove your finger from the pad. You must keep the pad fully depressed to keep the sample playing. For example, if you have a one-second sample it will stop after one second or when you release the pad, whichever happens first.
