How to Promote Yourself as a Musical Producer

To build a career as a musical producer, you need to promote yourself and your work. You must get your name out there so that people will recognize you; you must also have quality recordings that demonstrate your exemplary skills. Although promoting yourself does not ensure your success as a producer, it can greatly boost your chances of succeeding in this difficult and competitive business.

Record samples of your musical compositions. People need to be able to hear what the music you produce sounds like. Make sure your recordings are of a high quality and demonstrate the unique and creative skills you can bring to a musical recording. Upload your recordings online or create a CD and distribute it to people.

Create a website. This website should have samples of your work, a resume that exemplifies your credentials and your contact information. Like your recordings, make your website professional. Luckily, websites do not have to be costly. You can use social media websites, such as MySpace and Facebook. You may wish to consider trying to find a musician who has web design skills and would be willing to design your website in exchange for an agreement that you will produce his musical recording.

Contact prospective clients by handing out fliers or business cards, posting notices on websites or emailing the information. Networking is important in any business. Tell the prospective clients you are interested in possibly recording them. Give them a link to your website and include some of your credentials. Contact people you would actually want to record but be reasonable. If you are just starting out, it is likely a waste of time to contact Dr. Dre, Maroon 5 or another hugely popular act.

Record bands for free. When you are starting your business, you must get your name out there. Many bands and musicians are unwilling to pay big money to someone who is new and inexperienced. However, many are willing to record with a new producer for free. This arrangement can work to your advantage in three ways: 1) It gets your name out there. If the band or musician is happy with your work, they will tell other bands or friends. 2) It can build a relationship with the band or musician, and they might be willing to pay for your services in the future. 3) It gives you more practice at producing music, as well as more samples of your recordings.
