How to Make Yourself an Outstanding Music Producer

Music producers are the backbone of any music recording project. The producer is the individual who oversees all the differing aspects of the recording process, including engineering, recording, mixing and mastering. The producer often works closely with the artist to help him achieve his vision for his project and to shape the overall sound of the music being recorded. Being a good producer requires you to have a deep knowledge of how music is created and how the music industry is run as a business.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to college and earn a degree in audio engineering. Audio engineers are the ones who run all of the sound boards during a recording session. Attending school will equip you with the knowledge of how to use all of the sound engineering hardware and software in a studio setting. You will also learn how to create soundscapes and tricks that will allow you to begin tapping into your creativity.

    • 2

Land a job at a recording studio. A job at a recording studio as an engineer will give you one-on-one experience with another engineer. This will equip you with skills you would not be able to pick up during school. You will also begin working with other individuals in the recording industry and will allow you to build up a network of professionals for work in the future.

    • 3

Go to local concerts and shows to network with artists and bands. Make sure to meet local artists after shows and explain to them what you do for a living. Artists who do not have a contract with a recording company may be interested in recording some music and using your production services. Produce a few songs for local artists and then add this experience to your professional resume.

    • 4

Take some songs from the various projects you worked on and put them on a demo CD. You can send these demos off with a resume and cover letter to different recording studios and record labels to help further your career. Be patient and continue to work hard.
