How to Make a Mixtape in Serato

Serato is a brand of audio software aimed at the DJ and music-producer market. Serato Scratch Live is a vinyl emulation software program that lets you record your live DJ sets in real time. Recording in real time enables you to capture your sets as they happen, making for a more fluid and authentic-sounding mixtape. Once recorded, Scratch Live renders the mix as an Ableton Live session so you can edit out any mistakes or glitches from the mixtape before distributing it to your grateful fans.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon to open Serato Scratch Live. Select "ALS" from the Input menu and press "Record." Ableton Live doesn't need to open for you to record your mixtape because Serato Scratch saves the mix as an Ableton Live file, complete with automation and fades.

Perform your mix as you would under normal circumstances. You can include cross-fades, scratching, live equalization and other performance element you typically use. Serato Scratch Live records output, rather than input, so your mixtape will sound the same as the audience would hear it.

    • 3

Press "Record" once more to stop recording. When prompted, name the mixtape and then hit "Save."

    • 4

Press "Quit" to close down Serato Scratch Live.

    • 5

Open the "Serator Scratch Live Recordings" folder. The location of the file will depend on the specific configuration of your computer. If you can't find it, click "Start," "Search" and enter the name you gave to your set, with an ".als" suffix. The mixtape will open as a full Ableton Live set.

If you make a mistake while fading, you can correct it in Ableton.

Play the mixtape in Ableton. The benefit of having the mixtape rendered in Ableton is that you can edit it. The automation appears as lines on the screen. A down-fade is represented by an descending line and an up-fade is represented by an ascending line. If your set is 30 minutes long and an erroneous fade or scratch happens in the 29th minute, you can edit the mistake using the pencil tool to redraw the line. This saves you from having to record an entirely new mixtape.

Click "Effects" and select "Multiband Compression." Compressors temper the dynamics of the mixtape by cutting the volume peaks and boosting the volume dips in the waveform to create a more dynamically fluid sound. Adjust the "Ratio" and "Threshold" parameters to tweak the intensity and sensitivity of the compression to your preference.
