How to Make a Mixtape of Music

More common before the advent of digital devices, mixtapes sported a listener's favorite songs or acted as publicizing tools for bands. Today, the look of the mixtape has changed. The songs were once recorded onto a cassette tape, but today are usually on a CD or digital playlist. The digital versions allow you to control the order in which you listen to your favorite songs, instead of setting the computer or music player on shuffle.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of the songs that you want to include on your mixtape. Traditionally, mixtape songs flow together emotionally or adhere to some collective theme.

    • 2

Buy the songs digitally, through iTunes or another provider, or buy the artists' CDs the songs appear on and copy the songs you want to the computer.

    • 3

Arrange the songs in whatever order you want. Some mixtapes are arranged to create an emotional reaction, or to move from subject to subject according to the theme or the meaning of the lyrics or song titles.

    • 4

Burn the songs onto a CD, or create a playlist in whatever program you use for an MP3 player – such as iTunes. You can copy the songs onto a cassette tape if you wish, but it isn't necessary to do so for the playlist to be considered a mixtape.
