How to Strip Lyrics From a Beat

Digital audio workstations such as Pro Tools, Mixcraft, Cubase and Logic enable you to record, edit and mix your music using a computer. Because you aren't recording to tape, you can edit and undo edits with the click of a mouse. For this reason, modifying an existing piece of music is convenient and relatively simple. If you have a finished track, with lyrics and a beat, you can separate the two. This permits you to add new lyrics, use the original lyrics in another track or rerecord the original lyrics with a different microphone.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon to open your preferred digital audio workstation. It may take a few seconds for the program to launch. Depending on how your workstation is configured, either a blank session or the last saved session will open automatically. To get to a work-in-progress from another session, click "File," and select "Open Recent." Select the required track from the drop-down menu.

Identify the vocal audio files containing the lyrics you want to strip out of the song. If you haven't labelled the channels, this calls for selective listening. Click "Play" and press the "S" icon on each channel strip in turn. This mutes all other tracks, isolating the selected audio. When you hit on a vocal audio you want to strip out, double-click on it to rename it. Give it a name that denotes your intention to remove it, such as "Vox exported 1."

    • 3

Click on the first vocal track to highlight it. This brings up a set of parameter and command controls on the channel strip. The exact location of the controls varies according to which program you use, but they are typically located on the left of the channel strip, next to the volume units meter. Click "Send To" and select "Bus 1." In audio, a bus is a mix channel where you send multiple tracks. By sending them to a single mix channel, you can render multiple tracks as one file. Repeat this step for each selected vocal audio.

    • 4

Click on "Bus 1." The bus channels are typically located to the right of the standard audio channels. This highlights the channel and assigns subsequent commands to that channel.

    • 5

Click "File" and select "Export As," "Wav." Wav is a lossless file-format that preserves the original sound of the audio, as distinct from MP3, which compresses the audio. Wav files are larger than MP3s and take longer to export. When prompted, name the Wav file "Vox Sub Mix." This separates the vocal track from the beat.

Click the "M" icon on each vocal audio channel. This mutes the vocal, leaving only the beat audible.
