Utilize the Internet by creating a website or blog for your band. You can publish your mix tape on your site. There are many music sites that promote new artists. Write to all of them and ask that your tape be promoted on their site. Create a music video and post it on sites like YouTube. A DJ is more likely to play a mixed tape when the band has created their own hype.
Set up a Facebook and Twitter account for your band. Post comments and pictures of the band and links to your website or blog. Ask your friends to post the links to your Facebook, Twitter and website so that their friends can get to know your band. You can use other social media sites to garner support for your music.
Contact music magazines, websites and blogs and send links to your mix tape and ask them to review your music. If your mix tape is posted on their site or your music is reviewed, post these reviews on your website and social media outlets. Sending links of these reviews to a DJ will show that you are an established artist.
Play as many gigs as you can. If you have trouble booking events, hire an agent to book events for you. Promote your website and social media accounts at these events. Give out free CDs of your music or encourage people to download the mix tape from your website. DJs frequent live gigs to scout new talent.
Send links to your mixed tape to radio stations and club DJs once you have established a name for yourself. Ask them to play your music on their shows. Local radio stations are more likely to play your music, so start with these first.
