Create a MIDI track, known in Logic as an "INST" or instrument track. Click the "Track" menu at the top of your "Arrange" window (the default window that appears when you first open Logic Pro) and select "New Track." When the dialogue box appears, select "INST" as your desired track type, and not "AUDIO."
Double-click your new track to bring up your digital mixing board, which will appear along the bottom of your screen. Your new track will automatically appear highlighted on the mixer as well as on the "Arrange" window, but whereas it appears as a long horizontal bar on the "Arrange" window, it appears as a vertical strip on your mixer.
Click and hold the empty box directly beneath your "Input" heading on your mixer. Each track has an "Input" heading, so make sure to choose the one appearing on your highlighted track. From the list of pop-up options, select "Ultrabeat." Your Ultrabeat drum synthesizer will become your default MIDI instrument for your track, and an Ultrabeat window will appear on your screen, indicating your drum options.
Select a preset drum kit from the left column. If you do not want to go through the hassle of synthesizing each drum individually, you can choose from among Logic's library of default kits. For example, you can select an "Electronic Drum" kit to generate techno-sounding drums, or a "Rock Kit" for rock music. To sample what each kit sounds like, just select it and begin pressing keys on your MIDI controller (your MIDI keyboard or computer keyboard).
Edit your drums manually. To create your own drum kits, click the individual drum names along the left column of your Ultrabeat window, such as "Kick" or "Snare," and begin adjusting the settings on your on-screen synthesizer until each drum sounds just right.
Create step sequences. In addition to editing the way your drums sound, you can also edit the ways in which they play. Along the bottom of your Ultrabeat window, you will find a series of sixteen vertical bars or keys, each representing a beat. If, for example, you want your kick drum to play every fourth beat, you would select "Kick" from the left column of your window, and then click to highlight every fourth vertical bar along the bottom of your screen. Then you need only hold down the button on your MIDI keyboard corresponding to your kick drum (usually a low C key), and the kick drum will automatically play in perfect time on every fourth beat.
