How to Make Electric Guitar Strings Not Buzz

When electric guitar strings are too close to the fretboard or pickups, they will often buzz, making an unpleasant noise when you play the guitar. This is a common occurrence when you increase the gauge, or thickness, of your guitar strings. It also can occur after a truss rod adjustment has been made to your guitar. In order to rid your guitar of this buzz, you can simply raise the height of the strings on your guitar. This is done by adjusting the string height screws in the bridge of your guitar.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for the string height screws in the bridge of your guitar and identify whether or not they can be adjusted with a small screwdriver or Allen wrench. Some electric guitars will have two screws that surround each string, while other guitars will have two screws that adjust the overall height of all the strings.

Place a screwdriver or Allen wrench into each screw and turn it counterclockwise to raise the string height. Loosen each screw the same amount to ensure an even string height across your guitar.

    • 3

Make a small adjustment to each string height screw and then play the guitar to check for buzzing. Continue to loosen the string height screws until the strings no longer buzz.
