How to Make a Guitar Sound Like a Banjo on a Recording
The electric guitar has been used in most music genres since it first became popular during the 1950s and '60s. Since then, advances in effects pedals and amplifiers have made it possible to make several distorted sounds on an electric guitar, which various bands have used in their recordings and shows. Even without using any effects pedals, however, you can make an electric guitar sound like other instruments — a banjo, for example.

1
Set up the guitar, amplifiers and recording equipment you would normally, and set the amplifier to the clean setting so you aren't using any other effects.
-
2
Place a paper towel beneath the strings between the pickups. This step only requires one or two paper towels.

3
Adjust the paper towels while plucking the strings so the towels mute the strings evenly.

4
Pick the strings rather than strumming to achieve an effective banjo sound with an electric guitar.
