How to Synchronize a VS2480 to an Alesis HD24

One of the machines that gave rise to the project studio boom of the 1990s, the Alesis ADAT name now refers to hard disk recorders. The HD24 is a 24-track standalone recorder using the ADAT communications protocol, allowing eight digital tracks to be transferred simultaneously. The VS-2480 is Roland's standalone digital audio workstation (DAW). While the VS-2480 uses its own data protocol, it can be synchronized through the use of a special data converter.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the VS-2480 and the DIF-AT24 using the R-Bus cable. Connect the lightpipe cables between the DIF-AT24 and the bank of eight tracks on the HD24 to which you want to synchronize.

    • 2

Select the recorder to use as a master clock by using the "MasterClk" switch on the DIF-AT24. Set each recorder to send or receive data accordingly.

    • 3

Set the "Master Clock" setting on the "Project Parameter" screen to "Internal" to use the VS-2480 as the master device. Change this setting to "R-Bus" to use the HD24 as the master device. The HD24 will automatically set itself to synchronize when lightpipe connections are made.

    • 4

The ADAT indicator light will turn on when presence of an ADAT sync signal is detected at the ADAT Digital In connection. The VS-2480 and the HD24 will now be connected and synchronized.
