How to Hook up a Digidesign Profile

Avid Audio — of which DigiDesign was a subsidiary before being combined with Avid in 2010 — offers a variety of hardware and software solutions for the digital musician and recording engineer. The VENUE Profile, one of their higher-end live consoles, offers a near-complete mixing and mastering solution that has the advantage of also being easily transportable. Because it’s intended for use not only in a studio, but also in live music situations such as concerts and recitals, Avid has endeavored to make the Profile relatively easy to hook up.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the VENUE Profile console prior to making any connections between it and any other device. Complete assembly instructions are supplied in the accompanying documentation. After assembly, do not turn the console on until all connections have been made. Most connectors on the console are found on the back panel, but some — such as the USB connectors for a keyboard and mouse — are found on the front.

    • 2

Connect a VGA display to the VGA connector on the back panel. The Profile needs a display for complete functionality.

    • 3

Connect a USB keyboard and USB mouse to the appropriately-labeled USB ports on the front panel of the Profile console. The correct USB connectors are found on the front of the console, below the faders for inputs 17 through 24.

    • 4

Use the included FOH Link cable to connect the FOH Link connector on the Profile’s back panel to the complementary connector on the Mix Rack or FOH Rack, depending on the option you selected when you purchased the system.

    • 5

Connect the included IEC power cables to the IEC power sockets on the Profile’s back panel. Don’t plug the other end of the cables into a wall socket yet.

    • 6

Connect your footswitch, if applicable, to one of the TS footswitch connectors on the Profile’s back panel.

    • 7

Connect the included console lights’ XLR3-F connectors to the appropriately-labeled inputs on the Profile’s back panel.

    • 8

Connect a talkback microphone to the XLR connector labeled “Talkback/OSO” on the Profile’s top panel. It’s located in the upper right corner. A talkback microphone isn’t necessary, but is very useful during recording sessions and mixing for communications between different sections of the studio. The Profile doesn’t come with a talkback microphone — you will need to purchase one separately.

    • 9

Connect any GPI-compatible devices such as relays, logic managers and LED displays to the GPI connectors on the Profile’s back panel. The Profile’s GPI connectors can interface with any GPI-compatible device. Once done, the Profile is now completely hooked up and ready to be powered on.
