How to Find Radio Stations by Frequency

It happens from time to time. You're in your car, tuned into an unfamiliar radio station when something comes on that piques your interest. You'd like to know what this station is that you're listening to, but the announcements are either vague or far and few in between, and it's time for you to get out of the car. So how can you find the name of a radio station when all you know is its frequency? Or perhaps you'd actually like to know how to go about tuning your radio to a specific frequency for a particular radio station.

Instructions

  1. When You Know the Radio Frequency

    • 1

Write down the frequency listed on the LCD display of your radio.

    • 2

Tune into that frequency at least five minutes before the top of any hour and listen to the broadcast. All radio stations must broadcast a "legal identification" at least once an hour. A legal identification states the radio station's call letters, frequency, and city of license. For example, "WBZ News Radio 1030 Boston." Legal IDs generally air within a window of five minutes before or after the top of every hour.

    • 3

Go online. Another method of finding out more about the radio station you're listening to is to type in the frequency of the radio station you're curious about and its suspected city of license in a search engine. The city of license is usually the nearest major city or town. For example, if you're picking up a radio station in Newton, Massachusetts, the city of license is most likely Boston, Massachusetts. Usually entering just the radio frequency and major city of broadcast for a radio station is enough to bring up the appropriate website for it. So if you search for "106.7 Los Angeles," for instance, the web site for KROQ FM will pop up.

    • 8

      Turn on your radio.

    • 9

Set the AM/FM switch to either FM or AM. FM for frequencies that contain a decimal, such as 98.7. AM for frequencies that have no decimal, such as 1260.

Turn the tuning knob until the dial is between the two numbers on the display which are most closely just below and above your desired frequency. Turn the tuning knob forwards and/or backwards to adjust the dial to various points between these two numbers. As you turn the dial, listen for a clear radio signal. Stop turning the knob when you hit the position that picks up your frequency.
