16+ Nightclubs in California

Most nightclubs that serve alcohol have a strict, and appropriate, 21-years-old-and-over rule. That means that if you're 16, it's difficult to find a nightclub you can get into. However, "all ages" nightclubs do exist and are geared toward teenagers. It's always a good idea to read up and research where your teenager will be spending his night, keeping in mind that a nightclub advertised as an "all ages" club should not have any alcohol on the premises.

    • SOMA, in San Diego, California, is an all-ages live music venue with a strict no-alcohol policy. It can hold as many as 2,400 people, but normally accommodates about 500. There's usually a cover charge of about $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance online. Once a show is "Sold Out," there are no further tickets that are released, so if you're used to buying tickets at the door, you will want to make sure there are still some available before heading to the show.

    Chain Reaction

    • A little further up north, you can find Chain Reaction in Anaheim, California. It feels like a dive rock and roll music bar, minus the alcohol. Packed with teens, it usually has a cover charge of from $8 to $20. It's home to some of the hippest bands around. They have private parties and special events, and if your band is looking for a gig, you should give them a call. They welcome submissions.

    Avant Garde Ballroom

    • If your teenager would rather dance than listen to live music, the Avant Garde Ballroom in Newport Beach, California, is the place for her. It's a dance school that opens up its floor at night for "clubbers" looking for an all-ages alternative. There's no bar and no liquor. The emphasis is on dancing. There is a cover charge of $10 to $20, depending on the event. It's a wonderful alternative if your teenager wants to dance and hang out with like-minded dancers. It's also a great way to learn about all dance forms, as different nights offer different themes.
