Instructions

    • 1

Plan the type of music video you are going to make and the images or video you want to show. The content or storyline of your video will determine what video footage and/or music you will need.

    • 2

Choose the music you will use for your music video and save it to your computer in a file type that your particular video-editing software supports. You can either make a song yourself or use the work of someone else. However, you must take precaution not to use music that you do not have permission to use. If music is copyrighted, you need to get special permission to use it from the owner, before publishing beyond personal use.

    • 3

Gather the footage you will use in your music video and save it to your computer in any file type your particular video editing software supports. You can choose to create your own footage by either filming it or animating it yourself, or you can easily find stock footage online. Generally, content from movies, etc. is copyrighted, but many stock footage sites that offer good content. You can even find some websites offering stock footage for free.

As with music, you need to make sure that you have full permission to use whatever footage you choose.

    • 4

Open the video editing software you have on your computer, such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, and import the music and footage files you have collected and saved to your computer.

    • 5

Add the music to the storyboard or time line of your video editing program. Typically, with most video editing programs, you can do this simply by dragging the file down to the time line. If you are having trouble figuring out how to do this using your program, see the Help topics your program offers.

    • 6

Begin adding your footage to the music you have placed on the time line. The way you cut and edit your footage will depend entirely on the type of music video you are making and the particular style ideas you had in mind for your specific music video. Most video editing software include a list of preset transition options to place in between cuts of footage, if desired. These may add to the professionalism of your music video, if used in moderation.

Once you are satisfied with your music video on the time line of your software, you must choose to "export" the video to your computer in order to save the project as a completed video file. Generally, this option can be found under the "File" tab in most video editing software. The option may appear as just "export" or, as with Windows Movie Maker, it could be labeled as "Save To My Computer." The process of saving the video may take several minutes up to an hour or so, but it will allow you to save the file to a flash drive or portable disc so that you may bring it in to class. The way in which you will bring the file to class will most likely depend on the instructions of your teacher or professor.
