Review the audition notice. Information regarding the genre of song, duration and type of accompaniment (piano, recorded CD, etc.) will be listed. Follow the instructions within the audition notice carefully because if your video does not match the requirements the reviewing party may not consider the video.
Gather filming equipment. To record a music audition you will need a digital camcorder, a tripod and an external microphone to ensure the sound is clearly recorded. Make sure that the camcorder features a microphone jack to plug in the external microphone.
Set up the camera and attach the microphone. Have a friend frame up the shot. Stand at least six feet away from the camera and film your body from the waist up. Make sure your face can be clearly seen.
Test the camcorder by recording a practice shot. While singing, perform the song as you would during the show; however, keep all movement to a minimum to prevent from accidentally walking out of frame. Have your friend carefully watch your performance through the camcorder's viewscreen.
Review the test recording to ensure your voice and music can be clearly heard. Make adjustments to the audio levels and lighting if necessary.
Record the song at least three times and review these recordings. Before singing the song, state your name and the title of the music. Select the best take and upload the video into your computer. Most digital camcorders come with computer software to streamline the uploading process.
Finalize the audition tape on your computer. Use free editing software such as Microsoft Movie Maker or Apple iMovie to add your name and contact information at the beginning of the tape, and burn three copies of the audition tape using a DVD-R/DVD-RW disc.
Mail the music audition tape to the specified address located in the audition notice. Make sure to include other requested materials, such as a headshot/resume or cover letter detailing your music experience.
