How to Make an Amateur Music Video

As an amateur videographer, you may not believe you can create a quality music video for your band or musical project on your first attempt. However, you can make an effective video with little or no production cost using a video camera and the editing software that comes with your personal computer. Whether you are using a Mac or PC, iMovie and Windows Movie Maker allows you to edit your amateur music video for free. You can also use a more expensive video editing program.

Instructions

    • 1

Come up with an idea for your amateur music video. Think of a plot and consider the video’s location, wardrobe and additional participants, if necessary.

    • 2

Play the video’s song aloud. Use a stereo system or playback device with speaker capabilities so the participants can time their movements and lip-syncing with the audio.

    • 3

Use the video camera to record the band and other participants’ performance.

    • 4

Copy the video recording from the camera onto your computer through your device’s usual means.

    • 5

Open your video editing software and start a new session. Import the video footage’s file into a new track in the multitrack viewer. Import the studio recording of the music video’s original song into a separate track in the multitrack viewer.

    • 6

Delete or mute audio connected to the video footage recording. It is unnecessary and will likely interfere with the studio recording’s audio.

    • 7

Click and drag the video and audio in their respective tracks until they align properly. The band and other participants’ movements should synchronize perfectly with the original studio recording during playback.

    • 8

Export or mix the session down into a new video file. Choose “Export” or “Mixdown” from the “File” or “Import/Export” tab in your video editing software’s menu bar.
