How to Convert an Unbalanced Audio Line to a Balanced Audio Line

The most reliable way to convert an unbalanced audio line to a balanced audio line is with an impedance matching transformer, also called a line matching transformer. Many modern professional audio components require the use of balanced audio lines because of the advantages of longer cable lengths and quieter operation. But some older components, or those made for consumer use, use unbalanced lines. A "line" is a term meaning a cable connection between components. Balanced line cables use 3-wire connectors, while unbalanced line cables use 2-wire connectors.

Things You'll Need

  • Connection cables
  • Impedance (line) matching transformer
  • Connector adapters (if needed)

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the unbalanced cable into the impedance matching transformer, in the plug marked "high-z" or "input." You may use a connector adapter on the high-z end if the cable connector does not match the transformer connector.

    • 2

Plug the balanced cable into the impedance matching transformer, in the plug marked "low-z" or "output."

    • 3

Plug the other end of the balanced cable into the input of the audio component.

    • 4

Turn on all equipment and test for operation.
