How to Make a Guitar Do a High Pitched Squeal

Pinch harmonic is one of the valuable techniques any aspiring guitar soloist should master. Being able to make your guitar scream will add highlights to your guitar solos and will certainly grab anyone's attention. This technique greatly involves the guitarist's picking hand and how the guitar pick is held, although a distortion pedal will be a great deal of help especially for beginners. And like any guitar technique, constant practice is needed to pull off the pinch harmonic at will.

  • Electric guitar cable
  • Distortion pedal
  • Guitar amplifier

Instructions

      Connect the electric guitar to the distortion pedal and to the guitar amplifier using the electric guitar cables.

      Select the bridge pick up on your electric guitar using the electric guitar's pick up selector toggle switch.

      Set the distortion on the distortion pedal to maximum by turning the distortion knob fully clockwise.

      Hold the guitar pick using your thumb and index finger. Expose only a small portion of the guitar pick's tip when holding the guitar pick.

      Press any guitar string using your fretting hand. Using a downward stroke, strike the guitar string with the tip of the guitar pick then let the skin of your thumb lightly touch the guitar string as the thumb is moving downwards.

      Bend the guitar string using your fretting hand. This is done by pushing the strings upward across the guitar's fretboard. Do not bend the string too far as you can break the guitar's string. Bending the guitar's string will increase the pitch of the fretted string making your guitar squeal even higher.
