Bose 901 Grill Removal Instructions

901 speakers are a series of high-end stereo speakers produced by Bose. Older models of the 901 series feature a cloth grill that covers the front of the speaker, overlaying the drivers, cones and voice coils. You can remove this cloth grill to inspect or repair the internal components of the speaker. This process is relatively simple and should only require about half of an hour for each speaker.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the speaker horizontally on a workspace and shine a flashlight into the top-right corner of the speaker grill. The speaker grill is secured by six metal staples, three along the left side of the grill and three along the right side.

    • 2

Locate the first staple in the top-right corner of the grill. Insert the tip of a thin flat-head screwdriver through the twill of the cloth grill and into the middle section of the staple.

    • 3

Hammer the end of the flat-head screwdriver with a hammer, until the staple lifts up slightly.

    • 4

Grasp the staple using a set of needle nose pliers and pull directly out to remove it.

    • 5

Repeat this process on the five other staples. Note that there are two more staples on the right side, one located along the middle right edge of the grill and the other located in the bottom right corner. The three staples on the left side of the speaker mirror the location of the staples on the right side.

    • 6

Grasp the edges of the cloth grill and pull outward to remove it completely from the speakers.
