DIY Sound Blocking Panels

Sound blocking is normally referred to as sound-proofing and is employed when a sound barrier is needed to keep sound in a certain place and out of another. There are many materials that are sold for sound-proofing as well as many lesser quality options that may be found in the home for a cheaper price. Sound blocking panels are very effective for instances when the barriers need to be moved for different situations.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the sheet of 1-inch thick fiberglass on the saw horses to be cut. Place the saw horses one foot from each other for ideal support.

    • 2

Use the yard stick and marker to mark each edge of the fiberglass panel at its half-way point. For the shorter sides, the mark should be at two feet from the corners, and on the longer sides, the mark should be at four feet from the corners. Find and mark the middle of the panel surface by aligning your yard stick with the point on the long side and measuring in two feet. Do the same with the mark on the short side, making sure the measurement from the longer falls at the same point. There should be a marking on each edge and one in the center of the fiberglass sheet. Draw a line from each side mark to the center mark. You should have two lines that stretch from side to side and all meet in the middle at your center mark.

    • 3

Use the circular saw to cut along the lines that were drawn with the marker. After cutting, you should have four 2-ft. by 4-ft. pieces of fiberglass.

    • 4

Cut the fabric into panels two inches longer on each side than the fiberglass to have room to attach the fabric to the back of the fiberglass. You should have four panels of fabric to cover each piece of fiberglass.

    • 5

Lay a piece of the cut fabric on the floor, and lay a piece of cut fiberglass on top of the fabric. Center the fiberglass on the fabric, and use a staple gun to attach the excess fabric to the back side of the fiberglass. Repeat steps four and five for the other pieces of fiberglass and fabric.

    • 6

Use the epoxy pins to mount the panels on the wall by adhering the adhesive side of the pins onto the back corners of the panel. Mount the panel by pushing it against the wall in the desired location, making the sharp end of the epoxy pins stick into the wall.
