The oldest complete song that has survived intact to the present is "Hurrian Songs", a collection of songs in Hurrian from ancient Mesopotamia, dated to mid 2nd millennium BC. The melody and lyrics of the songs are both extant. The texts of this group of songs are syllabic and are therefore easier to sing. One melody can be played on several different texts, and all of them fit the same general metric.
