What is an acoustic electric guitar?

An acoustic-electric guitar (sometimes abbreviated as A/E) is a guitar that can reproduce its sound both naturally, "unplugged", as do traditional acoustic guitars, and also using a pickup and an external amplifier, like an electric guitar, hence the designation acoustic-electric or electro-acoustic.
