How to Fold a Dollar Bill to Make a Violin Mute

Since the late 17th century, composers have written music calling for muted string instruments. For orchestral violinists, losing or forgetting a mute can be a nightmare. Because violin mutes actually change the sound quality of the instrument -- and not just the volume -- it is virtually impossible to hide your misfortune from the conductor or your colleagues. But if you have a dollar bill in your wallet, you can rectify the situation until you can get another mute.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the long edges of the dollar bill in either hand and turn the dollar bill so that it hangs down.

    • 2

Slide your fingers to the top of the bill.

    • 3

Fold down the top about 1/4 inch and press the edge down to make a crease. You can fold the dollar either toward you or away from you. Working in the same direction as your first fold, continue tightly folding the dollar bill until you reach the bottom.

    • 4

Slide one end of the folded dollar bill under your G string, below the bridge. Slide the other end of the bill under your E string. Push the bill toward the bridge to get the effect of having an actual mute.
