How to Make a Violin Neck Rest

Creating your own violin neck rest will save you money and provide you with a greater degree of comfort while playing the violin. Professional violinists tend to avoid the use of a shoulder rest, but sometimes, when practicing for long hours, it can relieve some tension in your hands. A neck rest consists of a simple device that fits between the base of the violin and your neck to help support the instrument.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of cloth in a square 7 inches across by 7 inches wide.

    • 2

Fold the cloth over to create a rectangle. If you need more cushioning than this provides, you can insert a thin piece of foam between the cloth.

    • 3

Place the cloth on the underside of the violin between the chin rest and the right-hand side of the violin. Secure the cloth with a rubber band from the button of the violin, located on the chin rest, to the left edge of the violin.

    • 4

Create a more secure violin neck rest by folding the fabric over and sewing with a thread and needle along the edges of the cloth. Include your foam padding if you want a thicker neck rest.
