What is a timpani tone colour?
Timpani, also called kettledrums, produce low-pitched, sustained sounds with a distinct, booming tone color. The drums consist of a large hemispherical copper kettle with a calfskin membrane stretched over the open end. The tension of the membrane can be adjusted by turning a screw mechanism that raises or lowers the kettle’s rim. Timpani often perform an orchestral accompaniment role, accenting the rhythmic patterns and harmonies played by other instruments. While timpani notes don’t have a definite pitch—their pitch depends on the size of the drum and the membrane’s tension—the instruments can be tuned to specific notes when necessary. Timpani sticks also affect tone color, with felt-headed sticks producing a darker sound and wooden sticks creating a brighter sound.
