Why do people put tape on the top of their drums?

Drummers sometimes put tape or gel dots on cymbals to control overtones. Depending on the thickness and the material used, this can add a warm, dark tone to the cymbal, or can reduce an unwanted, higher harmonic and make the cymbal sound “drier”.
