Music Performance Grants

Music performance grants allow musicians funds to hold public performances of a variety of types, and may include anything from college music grants and scholarships to government subsidized grants for the arts and independent foundations. Regardless of the type and purpose, music grants are aimed at providing money for artists to finance payments for artists involved in performances, renting venues, promotion, and other fees and royalty payments involved in performing music.

  1. College Music Performance Grants

    • College music grants and scholarships are aimed at providing monies to college-age individuals, undergrad through doctoral, for the performance of musical pieces. One such grant is the National Foundation for the Advancement of Art's Young Arts Grant. This grant awards up to 10,000.00 to students of the arts, including those studying music performance. To be eligible, you must submit an application fee of 35.00, complete the necessary forms for your instrument and major, and submit an audition recording.

    Government Music Performance Grants

    • Government music grants are provided by federal agencies, such as the National Endowment for the Arts, and are aimed at funding not only student musicians, but professionals as well. This distinguishes them from grants aimed solely at college students. Oftentimes, entire organizations, like a community orchestra, will apply for such a grant. One example is the NEA's Access to Artist Excellence Grant, which provides between 5,000.00 and 150,000.00 to a musical performance organization that is deemed worthy. Prospective organizations will submit a grant proposal, usually written by a professional grant writer. Proposals should outline the goal of a proposed performance project, as well as the funding needs required.

    Independent Music Performance Grants

    • Independent music performance grants provide money from a source that is not controlled by the government or a college. Oftentimes, wealthy benefactors will establish a fund to award money to eligible music performers. Such a grant is the Aaron Copland Fund for Music Performance Grant, which awards 1,000.00 to 20,000.00 to eligible non-profit, American contemporary ensembles that have been together for at least 2 years. Emphasis for applying for this grant is on the performance of new music by modern composers.
