How to Sing the Tenor Line

Singing the tenor line in a choir presents several problems for those who have trouble singing internal lines. This problem commonly occurs with less-experienced singers and requires practice to learn how to sing the inner parts. The tenor functions as the highest male voice type and is therefore extremely audible. Learning to sing your part with ease will help you sing your role effectively and contribute to the overall choir sound.

Instructions

    • 1

Record the entire choir singing with a recording device, or purchase a recording for which you have the music. You can often find a professional recording of any piece your choir is singing.

    • 2

Play your part on the piano along with the recording. If you don't know how to play piano, you must learn, as success as a vocalist requires passing piano skills.

    • 3

Play your part on piano while singing along with the recording simultaneously. Listen to how your part fits in with the rest of the ensemble.

    • 4

Sing along with the recording without using the piano. If you experience trouble, go back to using the piano to help isolate your individual pitches.
