How to Play 'Imagine' on the Piano

There are few songs as timeless as John Lennon's classic "Imagine." Even though "Imagine" isn't musically complex, the chords are effective in evoking a pensive, almost meditative feel, over which Lennon laid a catchy vocal melody and thought-provoking lyrics. If you play piano, you have to learn "Imagine."

Place your right-hand pinky on the D above middle C. Your pointer finger goes on the G below middle C, and your thumb will go on the E below middle C. Place your left-hand thumb on the C one octave below middle C.

Alternate pressing your right hand down, and then your left hand three times. Change your right-hand pinky from the D above middle C, to the B just below middle C on the fourth beat.

    • 3

Keeping your left-hand thumb on the C, change your right hand position to F,A, and middle C. Put your thumb on the F below middle C, put your middle finger on A, and put your pinky on middle C. Alternate between right and left hands for three beats, just like in step two. On the fourth beat, press A, A sharp, then B for the little three-note lead. Go back to Step 1 then finished with this step. Complete this entire pattern four times, but on the fourth time, leave out the little three-note lead, and head straight into the chorus. This is the verse.

Keep the same position with both hands as you did for the the ending of the verse. Alternate between your right and left hand two times. Keep your left-hand thumb on C, and keep your right-hand pinky on middle C. Change only your right-hand thumb from F to the E right below it, and change your right-hand middle finger from A, to the G right below it. Alternate your right and left hand twice.

    • 5

Move your right-hand thumb up to the A below middle C, put your pointer finger on middle C, and your pinky on the F above middle C. Move your left-hand thumb up to the D right next to the C you've been playing this entire time, only for two beats. Keep your right-hand position the same, but move your left-hand thumb back to the C for two more beats.

    • 6

Change your right-hand position to a G chord, with your thumb on the G below middle C, your middle finger on B just below middle C, and your pinky on D just above middle C. Change your left-hand thumb to the G below the C you were just playing on. Alternate your right and left hand for three beats.

    • 7

Keep your right-hand thumb on the G note, and for the final beat, where the word "today" is sung, play two quick chords, one with each beat of the word. The first one will be your right-hand thumb on G with your middle finger on middle C and your pinky on the E above middle C. For the second chord, keep your thumb on G, and put your middle finger on the D just above middle C, then put your pinky on the F just above middle C. Go through Steps 4 through 7 one time to play the chorus of "Imagine."
