Browse through Craigslist in your area and surrounding areas for events needing a live band. Don't limit yourself to just the closest city, but be prepared to travel a bit. Also, don't expect too much in the beginning in the way of payment. In the beginning it is all about getting exposure and proving yourself.
Place ads in local newspapers, with a focus on any entertainment newspapers in your area. Many nonprofit events, graduation parties, anniversary parties and fundraisers are always looking for live entertainment.
Create a demo disk and deliver to local bars and nightclubs. Speak to the manager in person and give him a copy of your demo disk. Ask for the chance to entertain patrons. If possible, offer to play one night for free so he can get to know your talents and abilities.
Send your demo disk off to talent agents in an effort to find an agent. You will have to go into a large city for this. Mailing in a demo disk, along with photographs of your band and a cover letter, is the best way to pursue agents.
Approach communities and inquire about performing at their local events, such as summer festivals and winter socials. Again, branch out and hit every community within an hour or two's drive.
Create a MySpace page and a Facebook page to promote your work. Upload some of your band's songs in an effort to gain exposure and a fan base. This is also a great place to advertise where you will be playing next. When you play at a bar or an event and you draw a large crowd, the manager or coordinator is more likely to invite you back. It is good for business.
