How to Get a Sponsor for Your Band

In the music industry, it can be difficult for bands to not only make a substantial profit, but also support themselves financially. In order to support themselves, bands, whether or not they have a record deal, rely heavily on concert ticket, album and merchandise sales, all of which can be inconsistent. Throughout the years, bands have found creative ways to supplement these unreliable incomes. One of the more common approaches is to find a sponsor to help offset recording and touring fees. Finding the right sponsor takes time, research and patience, but if it is done right, it will help your band tremendously.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an artist profile and marketing plan for yourself. In the artist profile, write a brief band biography that covers your history, accomplishments, past recordings and tours and what you hope to achieve in the future. The artist profile should focus largely on the music, but also show that you are capable business people. In the marketing plan, identify your target audience. List the their age, where they are located and what they're interested in to show the potential sponsor who they will be advertising to. Once you're finished with the profile and marketing plan, keep them both handy, as they will be used in future meetings with sponsors.

Plan a presentation. Using the information you culled for the artist profile and marketing plan, develop an interesting multimedia presentation. Keep it professional and focused on your music and the business opportunities this offers the sponsor. Have a general format, but keep it flexible enough to personalize for each company you meet with.

Research potential sponsors. Most bands try to get sponsorships from large corporations and well-known names. However, since so many are trying for these limited sponsorships, they are difficult to receive. Instead, use untapped and local industries. Try local businesses that you frequent and could use the advertising. Once you have proven you can improve a company's business through sponsorship, you will be more likely to attract interest from larger corporations.

Identify the key person at the company. Most likely, it will be someone in the marketing division or a manager for smaller businesses. Learn all you can about this person and personalize the presentation for her. Explain how your band can help the company and him professionally. Always remember that you are making a business proposal, so keep it professional and on-topic. After contacting the key person, set up a meeting time and give your presentation.
