How to Survive a Widespread Panic Concert

Widespread Panic is a Southern-rock/jam band that is famous for its unique and exciting concerts. Fans of all lifestyles gather and leave their inhibitions in the parking lot as they prepare for an unforgettable experience. It can all be a bit overwhelming to the newcomer, but if you heed the following advice, you'll be feeling like a veteran in no time.

Instructions

  1. How to Be a Spreadhead

    • 1

Listen to Widespread Panic's music before going to the show. Purchase or borrow CDs like "Ain't Life Grande," "Bombs and Butterflies" and the band's self-titled disc before even purchasing the tickets. Download concert recordings to get a feel for the band's style.

    • 2

Plan to go to the concert with a friend who has seen the band before. He will be able to guide you through the sea of fans to get to a premier spot for watching and listening. Your friend should also be able to tell you what song the band is playing (so you have some idea of what you're listening to).

    • 3

Stretch your muscles and wear comfortable clothes. Almost everyone at the concert will be dancing from beginning to end, and if you want to fully experience the show, you should as well. For guys, T-shirts, jeans and flip-flops are recommended. Many women choose to wear flowing skirts and comfortable tops. This is not a fashion show, and if you dress like it is, you'll be uncomfortable and not feel like a true fan.

    • 4

Don't stare at the interesting people you will see. Many Widespread Panic fans dress unusually--like hippies--and sport long deadlocks and beards. Their clothing may be handmade, and some might not even smell very fresh. If you want to enjoy yourself, don't be intimidated or uptight about the appearance of others.

    • 5

Sing along to the songs you know. Dance if you feel like it. Don't be afraid of what others might think of any unusual action you feel like taking. To truly experience the concert, you need to do more than just listen to the music; you should feel it.

    • 6

Write down the songs you recognize during the show. You will probably not get all of them, but you'll be able to share what you've noticed with other fans and get a deeper appreciation for the band. Watch for other fans writing down notes on small notepads; they are jotting down songs, and will probably be able to tell you when the band last played that song live. Connecting with other fans is a big part of enjoying the show.
