How to Make a Speakon Speaker Cable

Speakon connectors are still fairly new to the live music community but are rapidly growing in popularity. These connectors use parts that can be stripped in the field with little more than a pocket knife or flat head screw driver, and most importantly, they require no soldering. Another great feature of speakon connections is the way they lock into position.

Things You'll Need

  • Desired length of 2-conductor speaker cable
  • 2 speakon connectors
  • Flat head screw driver
  • Wire cutters

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the speakon connectors by pulling back the slide lock and twisting in half, counter clockwise. This will separate the connector into two parts, the section that holds the cable and the section that inserts into a female connector.

    • 2

Slide the bottom halves of the speakon connectors onto the two ends of your cable.

    • 3

Strip back both ends of your speaker cable about 3/4 of an inch. You should only strip away the thick black casing that protects the two lead wires in the center of the cable.

    • 4

Strip back 3/8 of an inch from both of the lead wires on each end (labeled white and red).

    • 5

Slide the bare end of the positive (red) cable into the hole marked with "+1" inside the speakon connector's top half. Using your flat head screwdriver, tighten the screw next to the "+1" to lock the cable in place. Repeat on the other end of the cable.

    • 6

Slide the bare end of the negative (white) cable into the hole marked with a "-1" inside the speakon connector's top half. Using your flat head screwdriver, tighten the screw next to the "-1" to lock the cable in place. Repeat on the other end of the cable.

    • 7

Slide the connector halves back together and twist clockwise to lock them closed. Your speakon speaker cable is now ready for operation.
