How to Replace the Speaker Cable on a Guitar Amp

The speaker cable on a guitar amplifier is used to carry the audio signal from the output section of the amp to the input of a speaker cabinet. The signal is then delivered to the speakers to create sounds. If a speaker cable goes bad, it needs to be replaced. Possible reasons for a bad speaker cable include broken solder joints on one or more of the three leads attached to the connectors on either end of the cable or a short somewhere along the length of cable. You can purchase a new speaker cable from almost any local music store.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the guitar amplifier to avoid any loud pops that may result from unplugging cables.

    • 2

Remove the speaker cable jack that is plugged in to the guitar head. Remove the speaker cable jack that is plugged in to the speaker cabinet.

    • 3

Insert a jack from the new speaker cable into the output of the guitar amplifier. Insert the jack on the other end of the new speaker cable into the input of the speaker cabinet.
