Music Festivals with Camping

Two major categories of music festivals exist: commuter and camping. While the former can certainly be a good time, a camping festival, where the audience pitches tents and actually camps near the stages, is an experience every true music fan should have at least once. Since the turn of the century, camping music festivals have proliferated across the globe, especially in the United States and Europe. Most take place during the summer months and are held over long weekends.
  1. Major U.S. Camping Festivals

    • Bonnaroo (bonnaroo.com) is the most popular camping music festival in the United States, attracting over 80,000 people per year. It's held outside of Manchester, Tennessee, each June. Bonnaroo has become famous for attracting the most popular acts and artists in music, from all genres. Artisans sell their unique crafts throughout the festival grounds. Bonnaroo has been recognized for efforts in spreading environmental awareness.

Wakarusa (wakarusa.com) is another major camping festival. It's also held in early June, outside of Ozark, Arkansas. Wakarusa started in Lawrence, Kansas, in 2004, but moved to Arkansas in 2009. Each year it attracts more festival goers and more mainstream acts --- the festival sold out for the first time in 2009. About 20,000 attend each year.

    Major European Camping Festivals

    • Roskilde Festival (roskilde-festival.dk) is one of Europe's oldest camping festivals. Founded in 1971, it is held in late June or early July near Roskilde, Denmark. It originally featured mostly folk artists, but today it features a diverse spectrum of music, ranging from metal to hip-hop. Over 100,000 people attend each year.

The Glastonbury Festival (glastonburyfestivals.co.uk), held at the end of June in Somerset, England, is the world's largest camping music festival. The festival encompasses 900 acres. Over 120,000 people attended in 2010. It features a wide variety of musical artists and styles. 2012 will be an off year for the festival, but one can already register to order tickets for 2013 on the festival's website. The famous Pyramid Stage is the festival's icon.

    World Camping Music Festivals

    • Founded in 1990, Splashy Fen (splashyfen.co.za) is one of Africa's most renowned music camping festivals. It is held near Underberg, South Africa. Festival goers camp on a farm adjacent to the festival site. Splashy Fen is usually held during or around Easter weekend. Mostly South African artists perform, but they come from a wide variety of genres, from hip-hop to folk.

Fuji Rock Festival (smash-uk.com/frf11) is held annually at the end of July in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the world's biggest, with over 100,000 attendees and 200 acts each year, and advertises as the cleanest. Though most attendees choose to seek alternative accommodations, they offer a campsite on a golf course adjacent to the festival ground. Bands and artists come from all over the globe, from Malaysian DJs to American folk artists like Patti Smith.

Other Smaller Festivals in the United States

    • Sasquatch! Music Festival (sasquatchfestival.com) is held in during Memorial Day weekend in George, Washington, at the Gorge Amphitheater. Originally, it stuck to a folk and jam band aesthetic, but the recent past has seen an increasing number of electronic and hip-hop acts performing. Sasquatch! is growing in popularity, bringing in more attendees and more famous acts, like Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters.

Another camping festival growing in popularity is Summer Camp (summercampfestival.com), held during Memorial Day weekend in Chillicothe, Illinois. The festival is famous for offering hot air balloon rides. Most acts and artists are of the jam band or folk music genre. There is also a Kids Camp area, designed specifically for children.
