How to Make Beats on Fruity Loops

Beats are one of the most important parts of any music artist's or producer's career. Creating even a simple beat is important. Fruity Loops is a very easy-to-use beat-making program. Making beats with Fruity Loops allows the beat maker to experiment with different tempos, instruments and much more.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Fruity Loops by double-clicking the icon on your desktop or by locating it on your computer.

    • 2

Click on "Packs." This can be found on the left side of the Fruity Loops screen. Choose an instrument from this list. You can preview each sound before choosing it by clicking on it once.

    • 3

Click and hold down the left mouse button and drag the instrument to the main panel. Drop it over an instrument that already exists on the panel in order to replace it.

    • 4

Go back to "Packs" and choose a drum, bass and an instrument (if you haven't already). These are the basic elements needed to create a beat. You can use as many instruments as you'd like, but make sure that the each element is still able to be heard. Be sure that none of the instruments clash.

    • 5

Click on the tiny boxes on the main panel next to each instrument. You can highlight as many boxes as you like by clicking on them. Each time a box is highlighted, the instrument will play on this part of the beat. Experiment with changing the spacing and position of these boxes in order to make a song.

    • 6

Change the tempo of the beat by clicking the numbers in the tempo box (near the top center of the Fruity Loops screen), holding down the left mouse button, and dragging it up or down. The higher the tempo, the faster the beat, the lower the tempo, the slower the beat will be.

    • 7

Click the Play button to preview what your beat sounds like so far.

    • 8

Look at the bottom of the panel on the right side of the Fruity Loops screen. Notice that pattern 1 has a row highlighted. This is done automatically by the Fruity Loops program. On pattern 1, highlight as many rectangles as you like. The number of times it is highlighted is the number of times the instrument will be repeated during the actual beat.

    • 9

Do the same with pattern 2 with a bass instrument. The separate patterns allow you to play each sound independently. Open the piano roll in order to create bass that is interesting and fits the beat well. Experiment with different tones on your baseline.

    • 10

Highlight pattern 3 and open up the piano roll. Experiment with different tones on the piano roll like you did with the bass. After you've decided on the melody of your beat, highlight the squares in pattern 3.

    • 11

Play the song, save it, and create a song or upload it to the internet for others to hear. Be sure to get a copyright on the beat to avoid someone claiming it as their own.
