How to Check the Integrity of a Music File

If you've ever tried to listen to your music files and experienced the frustration of hearing clicks and pops, then you know how annoying poor file integrity can be. This is especially true if you want to burn a CD of .wav files to listen to in your home stereo or car. Different software programs are available that will let you test the integrity of your audio files so you can eliminate bad files from your library. For CDs and .wav files, the simplest way to test is by using Audio Integrity.

Things You'll Need

  • Audio Integrity software
  • Computer
  • Audio files in .wav format (on CD or computer drive)

Instructions

  1. Audio Integrity Setup

    • 1

Download the Audio Integrity program (see Resources section). The download version of Audio Integrity is available as a free trial. If you would like more functionality, then you can purchase the full version; however, if you only have a few files to check, then there is no reason to go beyond the trial version.

    • 2

Your computer probably will put the set-up file for Audio Integrity on your desktop. (If not, you can locate the file by using the search feature under the "Start" menu.) Double-click on the file or icon for the file to run the installer.

    • 3

At the end of the installer, let Audio Integrity run if you plan to check files right away. If you need to check files later, then you'll need to open up Audio Integrity when you're ready by double-clicking on the desktop icon or by locating the Audio Integrity .exe file in the "Programs" folder on your computer.

    Checking Your Files

    • 4

Click on either "Select files" or "Audio CD" to find files to check. "Select files" should be used for .wav files on your computer. "Audio CD" should be used if the files you want to check are on a disc inserted into your CD drive.

    • 5

A Windows Explorer window will pop up when you click on "Select files" or "Audio CD" so you can choose what files to test. After you have used this window to navigate to the files you want, click "OK."

    • 6

Wait for Audio Integrity to test the files you have selected. When Audio Integrity is done, it will tell you the number of errors you have in the file.

    • 7

Decide whether you want to keep the file, based on the Audio Integrity check results.

    • 8

If you want to get rid of a bad file, simply drag it into the recycle bin on your computer, right-click on the recycle bin and then select "Empty recycle bin." If you're asked whether you're sure you want to delete the files, choose "Yes."
