How to Find Bit Rate

Bit rate is measured in bits per second. This measurement traditionally applies to media files, like audio or video files. A standard measurement practice is to use kbps (kilobits per second), which is equal to one thousand bits per second. A typical MP3, for instance, is 128 kbps. The higher the bit rate, the better the quality of the information, because it is transmitting more data per second. Also, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file will be. Determining the bit rate of a media file can be achieved with a few clicks of your mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the file you wish you investigate. This can be done by searching your hard drive, or even by finding it in your iTunes library.

    • 2

Right-click the file (on a Mac, this would be a CTRL+click).

    • 3

Select "Properties" or "Get Info" from the drop-down menu.

    • 4

Locate the section called "Bit Rate" or seek the number that is followed by "kbps". This will vary depending on whether you have a Mac or a PC. This is the bit rate of your file.
