Instructions

  1. Make Beats Using Software

    • 1

Search for free beat-making software if you don't already have software installed. Good keywords to use in your search include "free," "beat making," "drum machine" and "software." Choose between either freeware or shareware beat-making programs. Scan any program files carefully before installing because freeware is more likely to come packaged with viruses or other malware. Freeware is often also short on features and rarely comes with tech support. Shareware programs are less likely to contain malware, but often request or require payment for full use. However, many shareware programs offer a free trial version.

    • 2

Open your free beat-making software program on your computer.

    • 3

Search through the software's beat library to find ones that you like best. Some common pre-made beats that you can build off of include hip-hop, house, jungle, rock and more. Your software may also include a sequencer or virtual drum pads that allow you to create beats from scratch using toms, snare, hi-hat, crash, kick drum and other elements.

    • 4

Add variety to your beat by changing the tempo, or adding fills, intros and more depending on the software. Layer beats on top of each other, or add simple synth chords and effects to give flavor to your beat.

    • 5

Export your beat as a hi-resolution WAV file, or a compressed MP3 file suitable for posting online.

    Make Beats Online

    • 6

Search for a free beat-making site online. Keywords to use may include "free," "music software," "freeware," "beat making" and "drum machine."

    • 7

Search through a beat-making site's library of pre-made beats and drag them onto the music score or beat creation section to add them to your master beat.

    • 8

Add variety to your beat by changing the tempo, or adding fills, intros and more depending on the site. Layer beats on top of each other, or add simple synth chords and effects to give flavor to your beat.

    • 9

Export your finished sweet beat as an MP3 or other audio file type, depending on the beat-making site. You can then post your beat to your MySpace page, blog or other site. You may also be able to create a link to your beat so that others can listen online.
