Ever since "Wired" magazine's 2003 story on "Superproducers," the art of generating beats for popular music has been front and center. What once required a studio and sprawling mixing station has become, thanks to advances in technology, a pastime anyone can enjoy from their laptop. If you would like to try your hand at putting together original beats, a plethora of tools are available for you to use for free online.

      Build your basic beat with a drum sequencer available for free download through a site such as www.brambos.com. The program Tunafish allows you to sample premade beat and sequence drums, the most basic part of a beat.

      Make a beat with Latin rhythms using www.salsabeatmachine.org. You can use this software online for free. It has two basic beat structures, a slower tempo salsa and the up-tempo merengue.

      Create a techno beat with Rubberduck, a virtual synthesizer from www.d-lusion.com. You can add drum loops with this free program, as well as make a beat for any club. This program contains sound effects. You can also add to and work with MIDI files to create your own splendid beat.
