How to Convert an AAC Audio File to MP3

Seen as the successor to the MP3, the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) file is becoming the preferred format for digital music players. Some portable MP3 devices do not support AAC files, however, in which case you'll need to convert AAC files to MP3 files.

      Visit CNET.com and click on the “Downloads” tab, which will take you to Download.CNET.com. You'll see tabs at the top of the page allowing you to choose between Windows, Mac, mobile or webware. Select Windows or Mac from the list (the first and default choice is Windows).

      Click on "MP3 and Audio Software" located in the sidebar drop-down list.

      Click on “Rippers and Converting Software” from the drop-down list.

      Choose from the list of programs. One popular converter for Mac users is Switch Audio Converter. Although Switch Audio Converter and the Windows version, Switch Plus Audio Converter, are free to try, some features are disabled after 14 days, and the full version costs $34.99. There are many other programs available, and most of them are free--including a free version of Switch for Mac users, “Switch Free Audio Converter.”

      Download your chosen program and open the software.

      Select the file you want to transfer and import it into the program.

      Select the output format as MP3. Choose your final destination for the file, which could be your desktop or music folder.

      Convert the file and save.
